How to Save

The pathway to having a good savings account is remarkably simple, any number of people have done it, but most lack the discipline to get started.

 SAVINGS ACCOUNT PATHWAY

The pathway to having a good savings account is remarkably simple, any number of people have done it, but most lack the discipline to get started.

Here is what happens

 - Maximise the income you earn

- Live within your means

- Save the difference – set it up so it can be done automatically.

Now this might sound old fashioned, but too bad. In the real world most of us are not talented enough to start the next Microsoft or play First Five for the All Blacks. This means your income alone is probably not going to make you rich, and it means making some hard choices.

A Couple of thoughts on KiwiSaver.

The new plans announced by the Government during 2008 for Kiwisaver making all contributions tax effective make Kiwisaver look very attractive.

BUT KIWISAVER HAS ONE BIG TRAP - you cannot get your money out until you are 65.

 KIWISAVER

You get a $1000 kickstart and tax credits up to $521 pa for saver contributions to Kiwisaver. Plus, if you are an employee, you save 2% of your gross wages (or 4% or 8%) and an additional 3% will be contributed by your employer.

This makes it a very attractive scheme and for most people it will be the best way to save.

HOWEVER THERE IS A TRAP IN KIWISAVER - you cannot access your savings until you are 65. So if you wish to save for a trip or a special occasion (or any number of other reasons) you will not be able to get it from your Kiwisaver account.
